Hi. My name is Kristen Wood.I am 14. I have been singing since I could talk. I feel as if God is calling me to sing. I love Christian music and I love to sing. I have written 20 songs. I am in the process of finishing my CD. I was wondering what I could do to get noticed. I really want my whole life dedicated to God. thanx KristenIP: Logged |

Hi KristenNormally I would say get out there and do some self promotion, but at your age I am not sure that some people would take you seriously. But what you do need to do is get out there and perform live, and create a fan base. Is there an adult that would be willing to help promote you? A parent, a Youth Leader, a Worship Leader, a good friend of the family? Hopefully, whoever you find will know what promotion is all about. God bless! IP: Logged |

hey kristen. i'm in the same boat. iv'e written a dozen or so songs, and am looking to record some of them so i can get myself out in the world. if we could keep in touch, we could help and support each other. i'm looking to find an inexpensive way to record and distribute myself in the christian music realm. if you or anyone else could help me, or know of something or someone who could, i'd appreciate it. thanx and God bless!!!

Something you might both look into is some more nationaly recognized Christian Music Misions/Ministries. These are typically groups that get together for a period of time (summer/1 year/2 year) and travel either around the country, or overseas sharing music and ministry and the gospel. They are typically by audition.I know that Campus Crusade for Christ does this, and there is another group, if you are interested pop me an email (dhochh@home.com), and I'll track down the name for you (some ex-members of the band I am currently in have done this, and I currently support one person. I'm pretty sure that the year/multi year ones you would have to be 18 to do, but the summer ones maybe open to high school age students (with parental permission), and while it may be too late for this summer there is always next summer. Hope this helps some. dhoch (Dave) IP: Logged |

The thing that I know to do is to make a demo of a couple songs and send them to record companies.IP: Logged |

Hi, Kristin - One thing I was going to suggest is that you send us your CD when it's done - We have a weekly local radio show dedicated to Christian artists, and if your style fits our format, we may be able to get your music on the air here locally. visit us at www.serenitysounds.com for the address, etc.God bless! Don't be in too big of a hurry; if God wants you to sing, nothing will stop you. http://www.melissa-graham.com music@melissa-graham.com IP: Logged |

A few quick ideas.Send promo packs to any and all record labels you can think of. Remember to check to see if they accept unsoliceted material. What this means is if they ask for it, then it's solicited. If they don't, it's unsolicited. And make sure that they carry your style of music, or at least stuff that's close. Send a promopack to magazines, fan zines, radio stations and all over. The more places you send it the more likely you'll get noticed. For a promopack send a bio (on page) a picture ( 8x11 ), your demo and some references. Pastoral is the best for Christian stations and media. Make a note of who you send it to, and then you can send small updates and information of future stuff. You may also want to get ahold of these people a month or two after you send your promopack to insure they got it and get their opinion. Don't call back labels though. They hate that. Get out there and perform. Go to churches, youth groups, and coffee houses and sing. During a summer break from school try and do two shows a week if you can pull it off. During school two or three a month would suffice. At shows and stuff, put a small booth up with your cds, t-shirts and stuff (church's may not like this, so check first). Always put up a place for people to sign up for a newsletter. Both email and postal. That way you can keep track or people who like you, and put out a monthly or bi-monthly newsletter to let people know what's going on. Give away free CDs. Go to a mall and walk around talking to people around you age, and give away your CD. Be careful, some malls don't like this, so check with your local mall first. You can also just do this at skaterinks and stuff. Whereever kids hang. Just hand your CD around. Whenever you hand out CDs, make sure it has BOOKING information. And make sure it looks decent. People won't listen if it looks cheese. You can sound brilliant and no one will listen because the CD looks poor. Print some nice high quality covers and put them in the jewel case. With self promotion always remember NOT to give out personal information. Yes, this is the Christian market, but there are weirdos everywhere, and some pose as 'harmless Christians'. Find a trusted adult (a pastor or youth leader is best) for an agent or contact person. Also, never go alone when handing out a CD to strangers. Especially young girls. Go with a few friends or an adult. Above all, pray. God will help you and bring you both challenges and opportunities abundant if that's His will. Hope this helps! Godbless, Tadd IP: Logged |

Hey Kristen my first question Is what is your cd called? I could help you with this situation. My name Rabecca and I am 15. I am hoping to record my own music someday even books. NOw if you can get some of your friends to listen to your music like maybe give a few of your closest a free one they might be able to go out and tell people about you. That would be a good start. So get back to me. And You can email me at angelprincess@godsangels.zzn.com and we can both figure somthing out. God Bless you and I will be praying for you.IP: Logged |

I'd just like to say Melissa Graham is the coolest 12-year-old I've heard of. But, in response to the actual topic, I will have to go with her response. If the Lord calls you into music ministry, nothing will hinder you. Of course, you can't just sit around and wait for a record deal to fall in your lap, but what you can do is take the other people's suggestions. Promote your music by finding gigs. They don't have to be big (as a matter of fact, I guarantee that your first few will probably not reach in the triple digits crowd-wise). But get a demo, I've found that asking money for something no one has heard of is not a good promotion method. But perform your original songs, get acquainted and comfortable with your stage presence, and your own original material (I can tell you from personal experience that playing your own music in front of over 500 teenagers is a scary thing). You could fail. You could get your name out there and the professionals will say that it's not good enough. But the most important thing to do, is to heed to the Lord's calling. If it's His will, He will make it happen. You won't believe the blessings that follow when you stay on His path. If you screw up the first couple times, don't worry about it. Dust it off your shoulders and tell yourself "Oh well, I will get it next time". Don't lose hope, but most of all don't lose faith. You will be showered with blessings, and I promise you that.IP: Logged |

What about those of us who have loads of talent and no cash? are we to just watch the world go by? what do WE do? I'm seventeen and since I was little wanted to sing. When I was thirteen I knew rock solid this is what God wants me to do. I've got a lot of good songs written, and am trying to find a REALLY cheap place to record a demo...unfortunately...that doesnt seem to existIP: Logged |

A couple of years from now, you may want to try to get in with CTI Music Ministries. They do 6-week summer trips (as well as year-long trips) doing music ministry internationally. They are associated with Youth For Christ. Try ctimusic.org to check it out. You have to be at least 16, but this may be a good opportunity for you to get some experience with both singing and serving (since the two really should go together!). Good luck!IP: Logged |

Every one is forgetting the main important thing in songwriting. Copyright your material first before you do or send out any demos. Then submit an application to BMI, Ascap or sesacc so you get airplay credit(money}. If you want help on how to do this email me at tlbvp@sbcglobal.net Also you can go to http://capitolmanagement.com/ for a lot more tips and info.I know this is advertising another web site but, there is a survival guide there that can be downloaded for free that I think would help a lot of you.[This message has been edited by lightbeam (edited 10-15-2003).] [This message has been edited by lightbeam (edited 10-15-2003).] IP: Logged | |
